As spinach is said to have a greater nutritional value than lettuce, I use it more often than lettuce, which does have water content & fiber. If you prefer to use lettuce, the general rule is to choose the dark green or red leaves, as there is a greater concentration of vitamins and minerals.
Spinach is said to be a health powerhouse. It is the richest plant source of folic acid, that helps prevent birth defects. They are also protective against stroke. They have anti-oxidants and fiber and packed with vitamins and minerals.
I usually buy the pre-packed spinach and wash it even if the package says it has been washed. I soak the spinach leaves in a dish of water with about ½ tsp. salt. I then rinse the spinach leaves under running water. I leave the water to drain and then use a salad spinner to remove excess water. I sometimes also use a paper towel to mop the leaves, especially when using spinach to make sandwiches.
The other ingredients in this salad are cucumber, tomatoes, pepper, pomegranate seeds & avocado slices. It is the dressing and ingredients that makes a salad unique.
